Near Death Experiences A near death experience (NDE) is a personal experience associated with death or impending death. A near death experience (NDE) is a profound psychological event that may occur to a person close to death or, if not near death, in a situation of physical or emotional crisis. Such experiences may encompass a variety of sensations including detachment from the body, feelings of levitation, total serenity, security, warmth, the experience of absolute dissolution, and the presence of a light. Whether happening “truly near death” or under benign circumstances, the near-death experience contains powerful images and emotions, usually of peace and love though sometimes terror, despair, guilt. An NDE may include an out-of-body experience and vivid perceptions of movement, light, darkness; encounters with deceased loved ones, unfamiliar entities and/or spiritual presences; sometimes a life review, a landscape, a sense of overpowering knowledge and purpose The after effects of an NDE or related experience are enduring, often powerful, and may be life-altering. The NDE belongs to a larger family of experiences that go beyond the usual limits of space and time and can transform a person's life and beliefs. They may be called spiritually trans-formative, conversion, mystical, religious, or trans-personal experiences.

IANDS (International Association For Near Death Studies) One-fourth of the 800 people who have submitted an account of their experience to the IANDS online NDE archives reported they were not close to death or clinically dead at the time. Instead, they were in emotionally intense situations, praying or meditating, sleeping, or in ordinary states of consciousness when this phenomenon occurred. IANDS refers to these as “near-death-like experiences” or NDLEs. Seventy-five percent of those who sent their accounts had a sense of being close to death, were in a life-threatening situation, or believed they were clinically dead. Common Characteristics More than 16 common characteristics of an NDE have been reported by near death experiencers. An NDE may include only one or two of these elements, and, in a few cases, all of them. These include: 1) a sense of being outside one’s physical body 2) perceiving it from an outside position 3) a sense of movement through darkness or a tunnel 4) intense emotions 5) heightened perceptions 6) experiencing a great light or darkness 7) perceiving a spiritual realm 8) which may include vividly memorable landscapes 9) encounters with deceased loved ones 10) encounters with spiritual beings and/or religious figure 11) knowledge of the nature of the universe 12) a life review 13) a sense of oneness and inter-connectedness 14 ) a border of no return 15) a sense of having knowledge of the future 16) messages regarding life’s purpose No two experiences are identical and no single feature is found in every NDE. The most commonly reported type of NDE involves intense feelings of peace, joy and love, often an encounter with an unconditionally loving light. Harrowing experiences are sometimes reported involving similar common elements but with opposite emotional states—extreme fear, isolation, non-being, confusion, occasional torment or guilt. Two substantial studies have reported the percentage of these negative NDEs as 17- 18%, although smaller studies have found as many as 30%; two online NDE sites report incidences of 8.6% -15%.

What Lies Beyond Death? There is no mystery greater than what lies beyond death? We have no definitive proven way of knowing what happens when life ends, and those who fully pass beyond its doors do not return. However, in later blogs we will go into more detail of the transition process of the soul upon passing over. But there are those who have, through great tragedy and pain, had a glimpse of what lies beyond. These are the people who have been as close to clinical death as possible, and have been revived. And when they returned, they brought back word of what they saw.

Reassurance Of Life After Death There’s incredible comfort in this—the reassurance that life doesn’t end after death, that there might be something more, is heartening. It’s wonderful to be reminded that our departed loved ones are waiting for us, and that behind it all, there’s a good and all-loving God just waiting to embrace us. And for those who are on the fence concerning faith, personal narratives of near-death experiences can be a push in the right direction. These experiences tend to be remarkably consistent in their details—too consistent for even the staunchest materialist to ignore. We all, at times, need that kind of boost to our faith. Most of us walk through life without ever seeing a hint of the supernatural, and so to hear stories of encounters with God, His angels, and the afterlife in general can be just the faith pick-me-up we need.
